The furniture is organized decentrally. 79 independent general agents contractually bound by Mobiliar look after the insured at around 160 locations in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. As of December 31, 2016, the Mobiliar Group (including general agencies) had 4,464 full-time positions.

Cooperative and commitment

The Swiss Mobiliar Cooperative has its own board of directors, which ensures the cooperative orientation, as well as an assembly of 150 delegates who represent the interests of the insured.

Since 1939, Mobiliar has shared its success with private and business customers with voluntary payments from the surplus fund. Such a payment was first made in 1926. In 2016/2017, CHF 155 million was distributed in the form of premium discounts for vehicle and business insurance. With a total of CHF 155 million, the premium bills for household and building insurance were reduced by 20% for a period of one year between mid-2017 and mid-2018. From 2013 to 2017, Swiss Mobiliar provided its policyholders in the non-life business with more than 730 million francs from the surplus fund.

As a cooperative, social commitment is part of the corporate culture . To date, Swiss Mobiliar has invested around CHF 30 million (as of May 2017) in 100 community prevention projects to date. Also in climate impact research and the early detection of natural hazards. Mobiliar also supports art - including in the form of its own art collection - and culture, research in the areas of data analysis and urban ecology, innovation processes in small and medium-sized companies, and sustainable projects throughout Switzerland. In terms of sponsorship, it focuses on indoor sports such as basketball, handball, floorball and volleyball with the Top Scorer furniture.

Since 2014, there has been a separate sustainability report as part of the annual report.

History of origin

Mobiliar is the oldest private insurance company in Switzerland. In 1825, the first attempt to establish a Swiss fire insurance company was made in Murten with the “Schweizerische Mobiliar-Assekuranzkasse”. In their statutes it was noted that premiums could also be paid in kind.

In February 1826 the company was re-established as a cooperative with the name “Swiss Society for Mutual Insurance of Furniture against Fire Damage” in Bern. Payments in kind were no longer provided for in the statutes. The politically, economically and socially committed Karl Anton von Lerber von Arnex (1784–1837) was a co-founder and, until his death in 1837, the company's first president. The head of the first policy was designed by the French painter Pierre-Nicolas Legrand .

The fire in Glarus in 1861 brought the company to the brink of ruin. She made a total damage payment of one million francs and subsequently had to take out a loan of 300,000 francs from the canton of Bern. It was only as a result of this city fire that further private Swiss fire insurance policies were established for movable property.

Until 1915, Mobiliar remained a pure fire insurance policy . In 1916 it expanded its range for the first time and introduced burglary insurance.

For its 100th birthday in 1926 they äufnete a fund for uninsurable damage by the elements , the first step towards insurance against damage and founded in 1936, Swiss Perils Pool. This pool ensures that natural hazards can be insured with a single premium that is affordable for all policyholders.

Partial and total revisions of the statutes enabled Mobiliar to further develop into all-line insurance.

In 1976, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary, Mobiliar established the “Jubilee Foundation”, which continues to promote science, the arts and other cultural endeavors to this day.

In 1991, Providentia Lebensversicherungsgesellschaft (since 2005 Schweizerische Mobiliar Lebensversicherungs-Gesellschaft AG) and Protekta Rechtsschutz-Versicherung AG were merged into the Mobiliar Group.

In 2000, Swiss Mobiliar gave itself a new structure: the Swiss Mobiliar Cooperative became the parent company, and the individual units were converted into joint stock companies that are wholly owned by the Swiss Mobiliar Cooperative.

Heavy rains led to major floods in August 2005, especially in Central Switzerland, the Bernese Oberland and the city of Bern. The gross claims expenditure for Mobiliar was around 485 million francs, the largest loss event in Swiss private insurance to date and in the history of Mobiliar. In response to this, Mobiliar began to support specific measures and projects of the municipalities to prevent natural hazards.

From the economic crisis and the associated restructuring measures at the beginning of the 21st century, Mobiliar emerged stronger. Since 2006 it has been in a phase of continuous growth above the market. She consistently relies on multi-channel sales and is constantly expanding her digital skills, including with investments in companies such as SwissCaution and Scout24.

As early as 1826, as a fire insurer, in addition to its name, Mobiliar gave itself the Swiss cross and the phoenix rising from the ashes as a distinguishing feature. The phoenix with the cross has been graphically developed several times, most recently twice by the Bern graphic artist Hans Hartmann . In 1998, Vogel und Kreuz were completely removed from the visual appearance of the furniture and the logo was reduced to pure lettering.

In 1998, Mobiliar was given a uniform corporate design for the first time, and “Swiss Mobiliar” became “Die Mobiliar”.

The last adaptation of the corporate design took place in April 2016, with the typeface being changed and “Insurance and provision” removed from the brand.

Mobiliar has been advertising with drawn damage sketches and "Liebe Mobiliar" ads since 1998. The campaign has since been supplemented with additional elements such as animated damage sketches. She has received several national and international awards. The damage sketches were developed by the Aebi, Strebel agency, which later became part of Publicis. The Wirz advertising agency has been developing the campaign since 2004.
