Science Pool is an organization based in Vienna ( Austria ) that offers programs for teaching children, young people and adults in several Austrian federal states .

Mission statement and goals

Science Pool aims to educate and train children and young people, in particular to develop scientific, mathematical, linguistic and social skills . This means teaching children and young people an age-appropriate and responsible use of natural sciences , mathematics , languages and interaction with others outside of the core curriculum and supporting them in their interest in independent experimentation and creative research. Both school and extracurricular opportunities are used to promote the interdisciplinary and cross-generational exchange of knowledge and values.

organization

Science Pool VIF was founded by Gerlinde Heil in 2011 as a non-profit association to promote the interests of children and young people. In 2015, a non-profit association for family events in the natural sciences was founded, and in 2018 the Science Pool VWV non-profit GmbH .

Programs

Science Pool reaches 20,000 children in school classes every year with its programs, an additional 7,000 adults in advanced training courses and over 200,000 people with major events.

Science clubs in Vienna and Burgenland

Science clubs are workshops that take place during the semester and outside of school for 10 consecutive weeks. This continuity ensures efficient knowledge transfer and is part of the didactic concept. Every semester, programs on physics , mathematics , chemistry and biology are worked on in the Science Club . The programs are age-adjusted and build over 4 years. Science clubs are primarily aimed at elementary schools, after-school care centers and lower grades (NMS, WMS, KMS, AHS, HS). A separate program is available for kindergartens and preschools, which is designed for two years. In total, science clubs are offered at over 100 schools during the school semester and more than 3000 children are taught weekly.

Science School in Lower Austria

In Lower Austria, the programs of the Science Clubs are offered in cooperation with the Province of Lower Austria, adapted as Science Schools. Instead of 10 courses, 9 are offered there; one of the units is held by an external young scientist from Lower Austria who introduces the students to his field of study or research. During the school semester, the Science Schools serve over 100 schools and teach more than 3000 children a week.

Science goes school in Lower Austria

As part of the FTI program in Lower Austria, the “Science goes School” project offers high school students the opportunity to experience science and research for themselves. Science Pool develops tailor-made workshop programs that can be booked free of charge by schools. These are held directly on site in the Lower Austrian schools. In the 2016/17 school year, more than 2000 schoolgirls from Lower Austria took part in “Science goes School” and attended the Science Pool workshops.

Science Labs in Vienna

Science Labs take place in the headquarters of the Science Pool in Vienna-Simmering and are aimed at kindergarten groups, after-school care groups and school classes (VS and secondary levels). The Science Labs are 2-4-hour workshops in which the children and schoolchildren can independently develop and experience sciences on a low-threshold but at a high level.

Summer Science in Vienna

The Summer Sciences of the Science Pool are holiday weeks that offer workshops for elementary school and lower and upper school students, the content of which ranges from natural sciences and social science to craft courses.

Further education and training for educators and teachers

For more than 10 years Science Pool has been providing individual seminar programs for in-school teacher training courses ( SCHILF ) and pedagogical days, which offer the opportunity to bring practical “pre-science” to their classes and groups with everyday materials. These programs have proven effective in preparing educational institutions for the MINT seal of approval.

Science Pool Institute for (pre-) science communication

Since 2018 Science Pool has been offering course-accompanying training with certification as a (pre-) science mediator. This training includes didactic PREP seminars, checkpoint meetings, paid internships and supervision.

Family events

Science Pool organizes or is booked for large events such as the wienXtra game festival or the Vienna water festival.

Museum of Nerds

Science Pool operates the Museum of Nerds, which was officially registered by the Museum Association in autumn 2015. The Museum of Nerds specializes in low-threshold and practical science communication with a focus on digitization and virtual reality .

Long night of research

In 2016 and 2018 Science Pool organized the Long Night of Research in Vienna with 75 locations, 650 stations and 87,000 visitors.
