Sciocoris (Sciocoris) cursitans is a bug from the family of stink bugs (Pentatomidae).

features

The bugs grow to be 4.5 to 6.0 millimeters long. They are pale brown in color and have a characteristic, broad and laterally expanded connexive (part of the abdomen that is visible on the side) and a very rounded head. The males have an organ of stridulation that they can use to make loud noises.

distribution and habitat

The species is distributed in Europe with the exception of the far north and east to the south of Siberia and Western Asia. In Central Europe it is the most common species of the genus Sciocoris and not rare. In England they are distributed locally in the south. They can be found in the Alps on southern slopes up to almost 2000 meters above sea level. Dry and warm areas are settled in a wide variety of open habitats, with both stony and sandy soil. The species is particularly numerous in dry habitats with loose sandy soil.

Way of life

The wintering takes place as an imago . The females have a particularly long lifespan and can be found after wintering until August, alongside the new generation of adults. They lay their eggs on various herbaceous plants, such as hawkweed ( Hieracium pilosella ) or the leaves and stems of spring cinquefoil ( Potentilla neumanniana ). However, no preferred food plants are known. The adults are often of Tachinidae (Tachinidae), often even several times a parasite .
