Scipione Capece

Scipione Capece (* around 1480 in Naples ; † 1551 ibid) was an Italian lawyer and humanist .

Life

Capece, son of the Neapolitan legal scholar Antonio Capece, taught civil law and joined the humanist circle of the Academy of Pontano (Latin: Academia Pontaniana). After the death of Jacopo Sannazaro, he took over the management of the academy. In 1543 he was banished from Naples because of his ties to the group around Juan de Valdés . He then spent most of the time in Salerno . In addition to legal works, Capece also wrote Latin poems based on the classical model.

  • De principiis rerum . Giuseppe Comino, Padua 1751 (Latin, digitized - didactic poem; question about the original element; Lucretius, De rerum natura ).
  • De vate maximo (epic; life of John the Baptist; biblical epic from late antiquity to the renaissance (content) as well as the epic of classical Roman literature (formal))
  • Four elegies (elegy, different themes, the lack of erotic content, which was very popular in the Renaissance; ancient elegy) is striking
  • Epigrams (epigram; various topics; ancient epigram, especially martial)

There are currently no modern academic editions or German translations of his works.
