Scopello is a coastal town in Italy on the Tyrrhenian Sea and is one of the fractions of the city of Castellammare del Golfo in the Free Municipal Consortium Trapani of the Sicily region .

Location and dates

Scopello has a population of around 80 people and is about 10 km northwest of Castellammare del Golfo. Nearby are the Zingaro nature reserve and the faraglioni di Scopello ( Scopello cliff ) with the neighboring Tonnara di Scopello . Scopello probably owes its name to the cliffs ( Latin : scopulus , Greek : scopelos ).

Not far from Scopello is Guidaloca , a bay bounded by the Pizzo della Gnacara and the Puntazza . Inside the bay there is an arched pebble beach about 400 m long. On the west side of the bay is a tower from the 16th century that was built to guard this stretch of coast.

history

The first settlement on the headland on which Scopello is located dates back to the Hellenistic period and also existed during Roman and Arab domination. A royal domain existed here during the Norman period . In 1237 Emperor Friedrich II of Brescia granted the Scopello area to the Lombard Otto von Camerana , with whom the Lombard horsemen also came to Sicily. However, since Scupellum was found unsuitable for the settlement of the Lombards, Otto von Camerana and his horsemen moved to Corleone in 1237 .

The current village dates back to the 17th century and is divided into two parts: a baglio, which dates back to the Norman period but dates back to the 18th century, and a square where the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and the parish of 1961 stands.

Ferdinand II designated the forest area near Scopello as a hunting ground, which he visited twice (1830 and 1859). A little later, hunting in Scopello became a state enterprise.

The tonnara

The Scopello Tonnara is one of the most important and oldest tuna factories in Sicily. The first buildings belonging to it date from the 13th century, but it was not until Giovanni Sanclemente and his family that it became a tonnara. The plant was then passed on to the Jesuits and ultimately belonged to the Florio family.
