Scybalocanthon is a genus of beetles that is common in Central and South America. As far as their way of life is known, they feed on excrement . 17 species are currently assigned to this genus.
features
The species of the genus Scybalocanthon are comparatively small scarab beetles . In addition to the characteristics typical of scarab beetles, they are distinguished from closely related genera such as Canthon primarily by various anatomical characteristics. Thus the pygidium lacks the basal margin that separates it from the propygidium , and the proepisternum has no keels or denticles on the lateral margin. Further characteristics concern the male genitals and the structure of the legs, especially the tarsi .
Systematics
The genus Scybalocanthon was described by Antonio Martínez in 1948 for the species S. moniliatus , formerly Canthon moniliatus , as a type . Until 1956, the genus contained three species, through a new description and revision by Francisco Silvério Pereira and Martínez in 1956, six more Canthon species were added to the genus and a new species was described. Further new descriptions of species of the genus did not follow until 1972, 2010 and 2011.
The genus currently contains a total of 17 species:
- S. arcabuquensis Molano & Medina 2010
- S. balachowskyi Martínez & Halffter 1972
- S. cyanocephalus (Harold 1868)
- S. darlingtoni (Paulian 1939)
- S. imitans (Harold 1868)
- S. kastneri (Balthasar 1939)
- S. kelleri Pereira & Martínez 1956
- S. korasakiae Silva 2011
- S. maculatus (Schmidt 1920)
- S. moniliatus (Bates 1887)
- S. nigellus (Schmidt 1922)
- S. nigriceps (Harold 1868)
- S. pinopterus (Kirsch 1873)
- S. pygidialis (Schmidt 1922)
- S. sexspilotum ( Guérin-Méneville , 1855)
- S. trimaculatus (Schmidt 1922)
- S. Zischkai Martínez 1949
Although there is no corresponding work, it can be assumed that the genera Scybalocanthon and Canthon are very closely related phylogenetically .
