Scythris knochella is a butterfly from the subfamily of the ornamental moths (Scythridinae). A common name of the species is Semicolon Heidefalter .

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 12 to 14 mm. The dark brown colored butterflies have a white pattern on their forewings. A white longitudinal line runs in the middle of the wing base over more than half the wing length. There is a smaller white spot on an imaginary continuation line. The outer trailing edge of the wing is "hairy". The very similar butterfly species Scythris heinemanni occurs in France and Italy.

The caterpillars have a white base color with green shading and yellow-red stripes on the top. Your head is more yellowish.

Occurrence

Scythris knochella is native to the western Palearctic . Their distribution area in Europe extends from the Iberian Peninsula to Central Europe and the Balkans and southern Sweden.

Way of life

Horn herbs ( Cerastium ) and thyme are considered to be forage for the caterpillars of Scythris knochella . The adults mainly fly in July. They are quite sluggish in the northern part of the range. The adults' diet consists of nectar from sunflower or other flowers.
