features

The moths have an elongated body and narrow wings that are fringed on the outer edge. The male penis ( aedeagus ) is hardened. Some species have point eyes ( Ocelli ). In some species the female sexual organs are very simple, in others they are very complex due to the regression and merging of different structures. The female seminal duct ( ductus seminalis ) broadly connects to the rearmost part of the sperm chamber ( corpus bursae ).

Occurrence

The main distribution area of the Scythridinae is the Holarctic .

Way of life

The caterpillars live on leaves and buds, some of them as miners . They feed on around 20 different plant families, but mainly on sunflower (Asteraceae) and rockrose plants (Cistaceae). They usually live solitary , only rarely in groups on the forage plants and spin a shelter around their body for protection, into which they can withdraw completely in case of danger.
