Scythris scopolella is a butterfly from the subfamily of the ornamental moths (Scythridinae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 13 to 18 mm. The dark brown colored butterflies have a distinctive white spot pattern on their front wings. Near the base of the wing, a narrow white band extends from the trailing edge of the wing to almost the leading edge. In the disk region there is a large white spot in the middle, in the post-disk region there is a larger white spot on the trailing edge of the wing and a smaller, centrally located white spot near the apex.

Occurrence

Scythris scopolella is native to the western Palearctic . Their distribution area in Europe ranges from the Iberian Peninsula and Italy in the south across Central Europe to Eastern Europe.

Way of life

The caterpillars of Scythris scopolella feed on herbaceous plants and mosses as Rockrose ( Helianthemum ), locust herbs ( Hypericum ), sedum ( Sedum ) and wall-rotation tooth moss ( Tortula muralis ). The adults' flight time lasts from mid-May to late June. The diurnal moths can be observed sucking on various flowers.
