The Seafield Works were a textile manufacturing company in the Scottish city ​​of Dundee in the council area of the same name . In 1986 its buildings were included in the Scottish Monument Lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The Seafield Works was founded in 1848 by Thomas Shepherd . A five-story spinning mill was completed around 1850 . Essentially in the early 1860s the company expanded significantly. The company, which specializes in the manufacture of carpets and mats from jute and coconut fiber , was in operation until it closed in 1986. At peak times, the Seafield Works employed more than 1,000 people. The buildings have since been rebuilt and divided into residential units.

The buildings are between Taylor Street and Shepherd's Loan to the west of Dundee city center. The mostly multi-storey buildings are designed in the historicizing Italianate style . The main elements include the High Mill (not to be confused with the High Mill of the Camperdown Works ), the Low Mill and the West Factory . Steam engines housed in a central building provided the drive . The masonry of the building consists of irregular stone blocks that were built into layered masonry. The south-facing main facade of the High Mill, built in 1861, is 22 axes wide. The final slate hipped roof has skylights and fans. A slender campanile rises up on the northwest edge , which leads up a staircase. The interior is fire-proof with cast iron beams and floors.
