Life

Städtler was born the son of a master baker in Roth, at 33a Hauptstrasse. He joined the imperial army in 1722. As a steward of provisions he took part in the campaign against the Turks. He died, presumably of an epidemic, in August 1740 in Greater Oradia, Hungary.

Shortly before his death, he decreed in his will that the city of Roth received the largest part of his fortune, at the time over 20,000 guilders. The city should initially invest this sum in order to build a one-story house with the interest-bearing capital of 30,000 guilders, which offers a carer and twelve men in need of care a lifelong apartment, food and drink.

Although the capital was already reached in 1765, due to political turmoil and the Napoleonic wars, the wish could not be realized until 1836.

In memory of the benefactor von Roth, the “Städtlerbrunnen” was built in 1909 by Hans Rößner . Städtlerstrasse is also named after him.
