The Sebastian Stroh GmbH is an Austrian spirits producer . Their most important brand is the Stroh spirit , which was previously sold under the name Stroh Inländer-Rum . Colloquially, the product is also referred to as straw rum .

The original Klagenfurt-based company Stroh is owned by Harold Burstein after a management buy-out and is thus an independent company again. The export share is around 66 percent, with the largest part being supplied to Germany, Scandinavia and the Benelux countries. The head office is located in Strohgasse in Klagenfurt.

history

In 1832 Sebastian Stroh started the commercial production of liqueurs and brandies in Klagenfurt. The company expanded its product range in the course of the 19th century and was able to receive the large gold medal at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 . In 1926 it was possible to fill a total of 1.2 million bottles from around 100 different brandies.

In 1969, Hanno Maurer-Stroh took over the family business in the fifth generation and was able to achieve an international brand placement in the 1970s. Between 1977 and 1980 the Klagenfurt location was expanded with a new plant.

From 1990 to 1992, straw expanded strongly in Eastern Europe through the establishment of subsidiaries in Hungary and Romania , and in the following years straw became the best-known Austrian branded product in Germany. In 1994, 10 million bottles were filled with different brandies.

A strategic alliance with the Linz company Stock and the German spirits company Eckes was followed in 1997 by the merger of Stroh and Stock to form “Stock & Stroh GmbH”, which was renamed “Stock Austria GmbH” in 1998. After the takeover by the British company Stock Spirits Group Ltd. In the summer of 2007, a management buy-out took place in August 2008 by the long-time managing director Harold Burstein.

From the factory site at the turn of the century in Klagenfurter Rosentaler Straße (“smelting works”), only one building is left today after it has been almost completely demolished , behind which the modern production facilities are now located.

Products

The most famous Straw product Stroh Original 80 with 80 % vol alcohol content , it exists vol with an alcohol content of 40% vol or 60%. By- products are straw Jagertee with 40% vol or 60% vol alcohol as well as straw punch , which are used as an additive to the corresponding hot beverages.

Manufacturing

According to Regulation (EEC) No. 1576/89, Stroh Original is made from highly rectified rum that is bought in from abroad and then flavored and colored in Austria (“ Bonificateurs ”). Since January 1, 1999, the alcohol base of Inländerrum must come from sugar cane processing, which was not the case with the product made from straw until then.
