Secrets is the eighth studio album by British synth-pop band The Human League . The album was released in 2001 on the short-lived music label Papillon Records, a sub-label of Chrysalis Records after it was sold to EMI .
History of origin
The album was made with the participation of the producer team TOY (Q. Engstrom, Kerry Hopwood & Dave Clayton) and the producer and mixer Dave Bascombe, who mixed the uncoupled comeback single All I Ever Wanted . Bascombe had produced for Depeche Mode and Tears For Fears , among others . Engstrom, Hopwood, and Clayton also had ties with Depeche Mode; Engstrom, a sound engineer at Matrix Studios in London, keyboardist Clayton and arranger Hopwood met during the production of Depeche Mode's Ultra album in 1997 and have been producing together as TOY since 1998, including Love and Violence for Wolfgang Flatz . The album was recorded at the band's home studio in Sheffield and at The Temple of Stress, a music studio and label in London. Neil Sutton was involved in many compositions, who has been involved since the album Romantic? wrote songs for The Human League. Seven of the 16 tracks are instrumental pieces. All I Ever Wanted and Love me Madly? were released as singles. The song produced by Barry Gilbey Tranquility was only used for the single All I Ever Wanted . Love me Madly? appeared after the bankruptcy of Papillon Records in 2003 on Nukove Records.
reception
Tim DiGravina from the music database Allmusic calls the album both an urgent and stimulating access to the past and a glimpse into the future. A handful of the songs are on par with the best material in the band.
Oliver Ding from Plattentests.de characterizes the album as another comeback attempt and attests the “neo-aromatic babble” under the title Diet Advice revisited “as much nutritional value as [a] telephone directory in an average German small town”.
