The seafaring school Leer is a listed building in Leer (East Frisia) . The school, which was built in 1878, continues to train prospective nautical experts and other maritime professions to this day.

The seafaring school building is an eaves, two-storey brick building, the facade of which is divided by cornices and cornices. The gabled main entrance is in the middle of the street-side facade, the window frames are made of molded bricks.

The navigation school was founded on October 1st, 1854 by the city of Leer. It was supported by the Leer Trade Deputation, the East Frisian Landscape and foundations of Leer citizens. The first school location was the city chancellery, from which it moved to the Tonhof on Groninger Straße in 1859. On May 1, 1865, the state of Hanover took over the school from the city. Hanover fell to Prussia in 1866 , which resulted in stronger state influence. After 1870 the school was expanded to three classes and in 1878 the present seafaring school building in Bergmannstraße was completed. In 1915 the navigation school was renamed the seafaring school and expanded further in the period after the First World War , as nautical training in the region was concentrated on Leer at the instigation of the Prussian House of Representatives and the smaller seafaring schools in Emden , Timmel and Westrhauderfehn were closed.

In 1972 the Maritime College was established in Leer. The technical college area was integrated in 1973 as the "Maritime Department" in the newly founded Fachhochschule Ostfriesland under the authority of the Ministry of Science and Culture, while the technical college area was the responsibility of the Ministry of Education as the Fachschule Seefahrt Leer.

On January 1, 2000, the Empty Seafaring College merged with the Seafaring Department under the overall administration of the university and the Ostfriesland University of Applied Sciences was merged this year into the Oldenburg / Ostfriesland / Wilhelmshaven University of Applied Sciences , with the Leeraner Maritime School becoming part of the Economics department.

After 2004, a planned closure of the Department of Maritime could be prevented, in addition to the study program Nautical also a degree course were shipping logistics furnished. In 2009, the Oldenburg / Ostfriesland / Wilhelmshaven University of Applied Sciences merged and the Maritime School formed the “Seafaring and Maritime Sciences” department of the newly founded Emden / Leer University .

In addition to the seafaring school, the Maritime Competence Center (Mariko) was founded in 2010 . In addition to maritime training, the Mariko also supports shipping and other activities in the maritime industry.
