Seemannsmission Lübeck

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Seemannsmission Lübeck is operated by the Deutsche Seemannsmission in Lübeck eV and is therefore a member of the German Seemannsmission . It is located in the state of Schleswig-Holstein on the site of the former Flender shipyard at Lübeck Harbor in Lübeck-Siems .

history

In 1906 the Lübeck Seemannsmission association was founded. Initially, a reading room on Hafenstrasse was used as a base for on-board visits. In 1913 a seaman's home was opened on the Untertrave . Replaced by a new building in 1966 and closed again in 2011 due to the dilapidation and now very remote location from the berths. Today the European Hanseatic Museum is located here .

The Lehmann shipping company then offered rooms in the former Flender shipyard in the immediate vicinity of the ship's berths. In 2010 the new rooms were moved into together with the administration of the association. Now the seaman's club with the name Sweder-Hoyer has been set up in memory of the first seaman's pastor.

Club work

The work in the seaman's mission is carried out by twelve (as of 2020) full-time and volunteer employees. The transfer of seafarers from and to the berths is offered by free bus shuttle. As in every seaman's mission, visits on board are important, during which the employees have many things that are important for the seafarers in their luggage, especially SIM cards and reading material in the national languages. Furthermore, the employees of the seaman's mission take on sick visits and pastoral support.

Sweder-Hoyer seaman's club

The “Sweder Hoyer” seaman's club has been in existence since November 2010. The premises offer a meeting point for seafarers to relax with drinks, snacks and community and to be able to chat with crew members from other ships. In addition to musical instruments and free WiFi, there are sports facilities such as billiards and darts. Important for seafarers are the opportunities to exchange money at fair conditions, to transfer money back home and to obtain books and magazines in the national languages. Since seafarers from Asian countries occasionally underestimate the European winter temperatures, warm clothes can be made in a small closet. A shuttle service provides seafarers with free travel to and from the berths.
