Moos waterworks

The Seewasserwerk Moos is a listed waterworks built in 1914 , which treats the lake water of Lake Zurich .

The plant is located in Wollishofen on the border with Adliswil . Up to 80,000 m³ of sea water can be treated daily. Around 20,000 m³ of spring water from the Sihl and Lorze valleys are added to this during treatment .

The lake water is collected at the point at the city limits in Wollishofen at a depth of around 30 meters and several hundred meters from the shore. The temperature at this depth is between 6 and 8 ° C all year round.

In the lake waterworks, the untreated water flows through natural sand and activated carbon filters . Between the filtrations the water is treated with ozone . Currently (summer 2010) the waterworks is being rebuilt and renewed.

From a natural history perspective, the greening of the flat roofs of the halls is important. When it was built in 1914, sod about 50 cm thick was transplanted from the surrounding grass onto the roofs, among other things to keep the interior cool. From this planting, a botanically highly interesting collection of orchids and other, in some cases rare, plants from poor, damp habitats has emerged. 10 different types of orchids grow. In total, over 170 types of plants and 20 types of spiders were counted. Such a biotope can hardly be found in the wild in the Swiss Plateau.
