Segenstein (Niederduerenbach)
The blessing stone in Niederdürenbach is a wayside shrine in the local community Niederdürenbach in the district of Ahrweiler ( Rhineland-Palatinate ). The protected cultural monument is on Brohltalstraße, corner of “Ernteweg”.
Basalt crosses are often seen in the Eifel . Blessing stones are a special form of these wayside crosses . They have niches that are more or less pronounced to accommodate the Holy of Holies ( Host ).
The Segenstein in Niederdürenbach has a pointed gable niche with a push-through grid. Above it is a tower-like structure with the crucifix in relief. Tracery-like patterns and geometric incisions can be seen on the surfaces of this structure .
The inscription on the front reads: "1699, 24 MEI". On the side wall of the niche there is the following text: “Oh man, Gedeck an Got, who has succeeded for you, who has come for over and forth for kneel down and here for step, for the dead bit [...] the creux has the common gestelet alone, o mensh, stay clean ”. With “common” it should be expressed that the community has set up the blessing stone.
It is believed that the experiences of suffering during the Palatinate War of Succession were the reason for the erection of the blessing stone.
