history

The line was opened on April 15, 1915 as the Musashino Line ( 武 蔵 野 線 , Musashinosen ) (not to be confused with the Musashino Line of the JR East) with the first piece from Ikebukuro to Hannō. Electrification, which began in 1922, was completed in 1925 by the Ikebukuro station. In the late 1920s, a second track was added from Ikebukuro to Hōya station and in 1929 the line was extended to Agano station. On March 25, 1952, the line got its current name.

In 1969 through traffic with the Seibu Chichibu line and in 1998 with the Seibu-Yūrakuchō line and the Yūrakuchō line of Tokyo Metro was added. In 2001 a second track from Ikebukuro to Hannō was completed. At the same time the four-track section from Nerima-Takanodai to Nakamurabashi opened, which in 2003 was extended to Nerima.
