The Neckar Canal Feudenheim is a side canal of the Neckar , the water level of which is regulated by the Ladenburg weir system . Seen in the direction of flow, it extends from Ladenburg , near the Ladenburg weir, to Mannheim not far from the Feudenheim lock .

Construction work 2007–2009

In the old, trapezoidal cross-section of the canal, it was no longer possible to maintain the required safety clearances between ships approaching each other and between ship and bank due to the increasing size of the ship. This, as well as the increased propulsion power of the ships, led to greater stress on the canal embankments sealed with concrete slabs. The consequence was increasing damage to the concrete slabs. There was a risk that more and more water would leak out of the sewer and that the stability of the sewer side dams would no longer be ensured. Therefore the Office for Neckar Development Heidelberg took over the security of the Neckar Canal in Feudenheim for 25 million euros.

Embankment

On both sides of the canal, the damaged, sloped bank was replaced with a vertical bank with sheet piling over a length of 3.40 km between the Ladenburg weir and the BAB 6 . As a result of the construction work, the stability of the Neckar dams was increased and the sewer was newly sealed.

Channel cross-section

The trapezoidal shape of the side channel turned into a rectangular profile with a water level of up to 42.00 m. With the widening of the cross-section of the canal, the safety and ease of shipping was noticeably improved. This goal served u. a. also the new construction of the Ilvesheim road bridge. The old bridge protruded into the dangerous clearance profile of the side canal and thus restricted safe shipping. This condition was eliminated by the construction of the new bridge. For this reason, the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration contributed EUR 1.4 million to the Baden-Württemberg state's bridge construction project, which cost EUR 5.3 million.

Compensatory measures

Although the selected rectangular profile is the most environmentally friendly of the five examined expansion variants with different cross-sectional design and lines, the construction activities led to unavoidable interventions in the environment. These interventions were compensated for with the construction of a fish passage at the Ladenburg weir, with the construction of two shallow water zones, with the planting of an alluvial forest in the Ilvesheimer Bogen, with the woody plantations along the side canal and with the creation of exit options for wild animals in the sheet piling. With the outlined ecological measures, the living conditions for animals and plants are noticeably upgraded.
