The Office for Neckar Development Heidelberg is one of seven new construction and development offices of the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration . It is subordinate to the General Directorate of Waterways and Shipping (previously the Waterways and Shipping Directorate Southwest in Mainz ).

history

The Office for Neckar Expansion Heidelberg was founded on November 26, 2007. The authority currently (2016) has around 70 employees, 15 of whom are employees of the state of Baden-Württemberg .

tasks

The tasks include the expansion of the Neckar for ships of 135 m length, for which the extension of the total of 27 locks between Mannheim and Plochingen is necessary. Ships with a maximum length of 105 m can currently be locked.

The tasks also include the construction and expansion of the lock systems and weirs , major repairs and structural adjustments. In the context of the continuity of the rivers, this also includes new construction of fish passages . In the area of ​​the waterway, the dams, which are up to 90 years old, are examined and upgraded if necessary. This also applies to other bank areas such as sheet pile walls . Mooring and turning points will also be upgraded as part of the adaptation to the larger ships.
