Selenates are the salts and esters of selenic acid H 2 SeO 4 . The selenate anion has the formula SeO 4 2− . Orthoselenates of orthoselenic acid H 6 SeO 6 (not known as a free acid) are also known.

Selenates are very similar to sulfates in their chemical properties. Unlike sulfates, selenates are good oxidizing agents ; they are reduced to selenites or selenium . In very acidic environments, hydrogen selenate ions, HSeO 4 - are formed in analogy to sulphates . Similar to sulfates, selenates often have a low solubility product in water.
