Selenochlamys ysbryda is a species of nudibranch from the Trigonochlamydidae familyof land snails (Stylommatophora). The species was onlyfoundin Wales in 2006.
features
Selenochlamys ysbryda is stretched out 6 to 7 cm long and has a very elongated habit . The breathing hole is at the back of the body. The animals are white and largely blind (rudimentary eyes are still present), an adaptation to the underground and nocturnal way of life.
Occurrence, way of life and distribution
The species was first discovered in Wales in 2006 and formally described for the first time in 2008. Since the range of the family Trigonochlamydidae is restricted to the Caucasus and the mountains of northern Turkey and northern Iran, it is assumed that it was introduced. Selenochlamys ysbryda differs from the only previously described species of the genus Selenochlamys , Selenochlamys pallida O. Boettger, 1883 in some features and was therefore described as a new species. Because of the radula and the anatomy of the throat, the animals are believed to be carnivores and hunt earthworms. They live mostly underground and are nocturnal. They have only been known from a few places in South Wales so far.
Systematics
The species name "ysbryd" means "ghost" in Welsh and alludes to the ghostly white color. The common name derived from this is "Ghost slug". It is only the second species from the genus Selenochlamys O. Boettger, 1883.
