location

The area of the desert is located north of the Ummendorfer district Neu Ummendorf , south of the Seelschen Bruch . The area surrounding the village is used for agriculture today.

history

The village of Selschen, also known as Selzen or Seelschen , was first mentioned in a document in 1196. Further mentions were made between the 13th and 16th centuries. It was the seat of an archdeacon of the Halberstadt diocese . The place was devastated at the beginning of the 16th century. The remaining residents settled in Ummendorf.

When French troops passed through in 1813, Selschen was still entered on their cards and was searched in vain by them.

The exact location of the desert had been forgotten. On March 21, 1973 the local researcher Karl Schlimme rediscovered the exact location of the place. On November 2, 1985 excavation work began under the direction of Heribert Stahlhofen , which was continued in September 1986.

At the village site, remains of the foundations of the Selschen village church have been preserved. A sandstone basin in the Ummendorf village church from the beginning of the 13th century probably originally came from the Selschen church. The cemetery originally located at the church could also be located.

At the request of the veterinarian and historian Albert Hansen, a memorial stone reminding of the Selschen village was erected at the northwest end of Neu Ummendorf .
