Semicarbazone

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Semicarbazones are organic chemical compounds that contain the grouping C = N – NH – CO – NH 2 as a functional group .

Manufacturing

Semicarbazones can be produced from semicarbazide or its salts and carbonyl compounds (more precisely aldehydes and ketones ) with elimination of water :

Formation of a semicarbazone

use

Similar to hydrazones and oximes , semicarbazones were previously of analytical importance, as their melting point enables the underlying carbonyl compound to be identified. Furthermore, semicarbazones can be used for the isolation and purification of carbonyl compounds, since semicarbazones can easily be hydrolytically cleaved again when exposed to dilute acids.

A semicarbazone used pharmacologically as an antiseptic is nitrofural .
