The Senekal War (English Senekal War or First Basotho War, Sesotho Ntoa ea senekane ) was a conflict between the Boers of the Orange Free State and Basotho under Moshoeshoe I in 1858 in what is now South Africa and Lesotho . As a result, the border between the two areas was redefined.

history

In 1845, the then governor of the Cape Colony , Sir Peregrine Maitland, established the border between the areas of European settlers, mostly Boers, and the Basotho so that the Basotho could claim the river triangle between Caledon and Oranje . In 1849 the British resident of the then Orange River Sovereignty , Henry Warden, moved the border eastward to accommodate the settlers. Casus Belli were cattle thefts of the Basotho in 1858, but the unclear boundary conditions are to be assumed as the main reason. The Orange Free State , founded in 1854, declared war on Basotho on March 19, 1858 under President Jacobus Boshof . The troops of the Free State invaded the Basotho country from the north and south and attacked several mission stations of the Société des missions évangéliques de Paris , as they blamed the French missionaries for the resistance of the Basotho. In return, Basotho troops raided farms in the Orange Free State and stole numerous cattle. The troops of the Free State, under their commanding officer F. Senekal, besieged the fortress Moshoeshoes I, the Thaba Bosiu plateau , but were unable to take them and withdrew after they had learned of their farms being looted.

The subsequent Treaty of Aliwal North (Treaty of Aliwal North) was brokered by the British High Commissioner Sir George Gray and signed on September 29, 1858. In it, the disputed border was re-established on a middle line. The northern border of the Basotho area, however, remained unclear. From then on, the Basotho were no longer allowed to hunt game in the Orange Free State and could be brought to justice there in the event of cattle theft.

Designations

The war was named after F. Senekal. The alternative name First Basotho War refers to the Seqiti War , which from 1865 also took place in two stages between troops from the Orange Free State and Basotho and is referred to as the Second and Third Basotho War .
