history

Previous buildings

There are possible, but not clearly established indications for the existence of a church in Schondra in the year 813, which was possibly built as a wooden church around 800 and was replaced by a stone church around 950. Around the year 1250 the stone building was expanded with the addition of a fortified church tower.

The first secured document comes from the year 1330. Around 1350 the church was rebuilt and equipped with Gothic elements. Until another renovation, this time with the addition of baroque elements, around 1750, the building structure of the church only had to be slightly repaired and maintained. In 1727 the historian Schannat described this church as the oldest in the abbey of Fulda .

In 1899 there were plans to expand the nave and add a transept. These plans failed due to resistance from the community. Starting from the Romanesque church tower, a uniform Romanesque church building was to be created.

In 1921 electric light was installed in the previous building and the church was whitewashed. The painter and gilder Karl Kolb from Bad Neustadt an der Saale restored side altars, pulpit and communion bench.

In 1952 a larger church building became necessary. For this reason, the previous church building in Schondra was demolished.

Today's St. Anne's Church

The new Schondraer Church was built under the direction of the Würzburg architect Eugen Altenhöfer, the architect of the St. Josefs Church in Schönderling (district of Schondra). The steeple of the previous church building was included in the new church building; its Romanesque style basement is now used in combination with a porch as a funeral hall.

The dedication of the St. Anna Church took place on November 15, 1954 under the Würzburg bishop Julius Döpfner . A first service was held earlier on Christmas 1953.

The new building consists of a square nave with a rectangular raised choir in the east.

On the eastern wall of the choir is a picture of the Ascension of Christ created by the painter Carl Clobes from Tückelhausen . The nave houses on the left a Madonna standing on a globe and on the right a sculpture of the church patron saint, St. Anna . Other sculptures show Emperor Heinrich and St. Nepomuk .

Due to the Second World War , two of the three bells in the church had to be replaced by new bells in 1950.

The organ was installed in 1987/88 by Norbert Krieger from Retzbach.

In 1999 the three bells of the church were supplemented by two more bells made by the Passau bell foundry Perner. The tones are es '- g' - as '- b' - c ”.
