Sengyou

Sengyou ( Chinese  僧祐 , Pinyin Sēngyòu , W.-G. Seng-yu ; 445 - 518 ) or Seng You , also translated as monk You , was a Buddhist master and historian of the Qi - Liang -time of the Southern Dynasties .

life and work

Sengyou, with the family name Yu 俞, came from Xiapi 下邳 (near today's Suining , Jiangsu Province). At the age of 14 he became a monk and studied Buddhism under Fada 法 达 in Dinglin Temple定 林寺 (Jinling, Fangshan) and with Faying 法 颖, a Vinaya master. So Sengyou later became a famous scholar in the Buddhist Vinaya. His most famous works are his collection of reports on the Tripitaka ( Chu sanzang jiji 出 三藏 記 集 , Collected Records concerning the Tripitaka , T 2145, a catalog of Buddhist literature translated into Chinese) and the Hongming ji Buddhist collection ( 弘 明 集 ).
