Senhime ( Japanese 千 姫 , German about: "Lady Sen"; born April 11, 1597 , died March 11, 1666 ) was the eldest daughter of Tokugawa Hidetada and thus a granddaughter of Ieyasu .

Life

Senhime's mother was Asai O-Gō ( 浅井 お 江 ). In 1598, Toyotomi Hideyoshi had decreed on the hospital bed that his son and successor Hideyori should have Ieyasu's granddaughter, Senhime, as his wife. To really establish this marriage, seven-year-old Senhime and eleven-year-old Hideyori were married to one another in 1603. Senhime was at Osaka Castle when it was besieged by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1615. But she was able to secretly flee before the castle was captured and destroyed. She reached the Tokugawa encampment, from where she was sent to Edo .

The following year she was married to Honda Tadatoki ( 本 多 忠 刻 ; 1596–1626), the eldest son of the lord of the castle at Kuwana Castle in the province of Ise , Honda Tadamasa ( 本 多 忠 政 ; 1575–1631). When Tadamasa was transferred to Himeji Castle , his son went with them. When Tadamasa died in 1626, Senhime went back to Edo. There she shaved her head and called herself Tenjūin ( 天 樹 院 ) and lived in the Takebashi residence of Edo Castle .

Sakazaki Naomori ( 坂 崎 直 盛 ; 1563-1616) had helped her escape from the besieged Osaka Castle . He is said to have received Senhime as his wife. It was rumored that he was murdered because of his marriage. Another rumor had it that Senhime went insane after Tadatoki's death. But that is considered refuted.

Senhime and her life were later processed in literature and the visual arts.
