The Sennhof in Chur is one of the two penal institutions in the canton of Graubünden , together with the Realta penitentiary near Cazis . It is on the edge of the old town between the courtyard and the Regulakirche .

building

The building was built in 1603 by the Chur city council and episcopal mint master Hans Jacob Wegerich (1562–1606). The Sennhof was first used as a house and partly as an agricultural and soap-producing industrial company.

The prison

The history of the Sennhof prison begins in 1817, when the young canton of Graubünden acquired the property and the building for around 40,000 Swiss francs, converted it into a breeding facility and appointed an interrogator domiciled there. From 1830 until it was demolished in 1963, the yellow log house, notorious for its space, existed as part of the Sennhof . In 1934 the Sennhof was extensively expanded. Since 2003, the Sennhof has had a 20-place detention center .
