Seoni is a city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh . The city is located in the south of the state.

The city is the administrative center of the Seoni district of the same name . Seoni has the status of a Municipal Council . The city is divided into 24 wards (constituencies).

Rudyard Kipling used the forests near Seoni (then Seeonee) as the setting for the Mowgli tales in The Jungle Book , although the area is not actually a rainforest.

Demographics

The city's population is 102,343 according to the 2011 census. Seoni has a gender ratio of 955 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The literacy rate was 90.5% in 2011, well above the regional and national average. Almost 76% of the population are Hindus , approx. 21% are Muslims and approx. 3% belong to another or no religion. 10.5% of the population are children under 6 years of age.
