Serasker
Serasker or Seraskier ( Ottoman سرعسکر İA serʿasker , Greek σερασκέρης ) was the highest rank in the Ottoman army and corresponded to the general and field marshal . The title was newly created in 1826 after the reform of the army by Mahmud II and replaced the titles Seyfiyye and Agha among the Janissaries . The Serasker was entitled to two or three horse tails .
With the Tanzimat reforms from 1839, a minister of war, who had all-encompassing power, was given the title. In 1879 the Serasker's power was restricted by Abdülhamid II and, from 1908, replaced by a defense minister.
