Serenade No. 6 in D major, "Serenata notturna" (KV 239)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Serenade No. 6 in D major, "Serenata notturna" (KV 239) , was written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in January 1776 for the carnival celebrations in Salzburg. The sentence sequence is:

  • Marcia. Maestoso
  • Menuetto Trio
  • Rondeau. Allegretto

The unusual line-up provides for two "orchestras" in the style of a concerto grosso , one with two solo violins , a viola and a double bass, the second with tutti strings and timpani .

Solo voices and tutti contrast in the opening movement; There is a special effect in two two-bar sections in which only the timpani and pizzicati of the tutti strings can be heard. In the trio of the subsequent minuet, only the solo quartet plays. A ten-measure, recitative adagio is inserted into the Allegretto-Rondo, again in full instrumentation .
