Sergei Petrovich Suslin

Sergei Petrovich Suslin ( Russian Сергей Петрович Суслин ; born November 9, 1944 in Moscow ) is a former Soviet judoka who won three bronze medals at world championships and was twice European champion.

Career

The 1.71 m tall Suslin fought in the lightweight, the weight class up to 63 kilograms was the lightest weight class in judo at that time. His first international success was the silver medal at the European Championships in Madrid in 1965 , when he lost to his compatriot Alexei Ilyushin in the final . The following year the European Championships took place in Luxembourg. Suslin won the singles final against Frenchman Jean-Claude Meslaye . The team from the Soviet Union won the team competition. In 1967 in Rome , Suslin defeated the Belgian Gustaaf Lauwereins in the final and successfully defended his title. Three months later, the 1967 World Championships were held in Salt Lake City . Suslin won a bronze medal behind the two Japanese Takafumi Shigeoka and Hirofumi Matsuda . At the European Championships in Lausanne in 1968 , Suslin reached the final and lost to his Soviet teammate Piruz Martkoplishvili .

In 1969 Suslin missed the medal ranks at the European Championships. At the 1969 World Championships in Mexico City, Suslin defeated French Jean-Jacques Mounier in the quarter-finals . In the semifinals he was defeated by the Japanese Toyokazu Nomura . Suslin won the battle for a bronze medal against the Belgian Gustaaf Lauwereins. The following year Suslin reached the final at the European Championships in 1970 in East Berlin, where he was defeated by Jean-Jacques Mounier. In 1971, Suslin won bronze at the World Championships for the third time after losing to Toyokazu Nomura in the semifinals like two years earlier. In the battle for bronze he defeated the Hungarian János Pulai . In 1972 Suslin reached the final at the European Championships in Voorburg for the sixth time, as in 1970 he was defeated by Frenchman Jean-Jacques Mounier in the final. At the end of his career, Suslin competed at the Olympic Games in Munich. After bye in the first round he was defeated by the Hungarian Ferenc Szabó by a judge's decision (Yusei-Gachi).
