Sergo Iskanderowitsch Ambarzumjan ( Armenian Սերգո Համբարձումյան Sergo Hambardsumjan, Russian Серго Искандерович Амбарцумян ; * 1910 in Bist, Ordubad Nakhichevan Rayon ; † April 13, 1983 in Moscow ) was a Soviet weightlifter of Armenian descent.

Career

The first Soviet heavyweight weightlifter who showed comparable performance to the weightlifters from the middle class was Sergo Ambarzumjan, an Armenian. A direct comparison with the athletes of the bourgeois states was not possible in the 1930s, since the sport was then divided into the bourgeois and the workers sport. Also in the Soviet Union, as in the associations of civil sport in the 1930s, the pentathlon, consisting of one-armed tearing and pushing as well as two-armed pushing, tearing and pushing, was practiced. The achievements that Ambarzumjan achieved are shown in the results of the USSR championships and from 1934 onwards are quite comparable to those of bourgeois sport. The victory in the pentathlon in 1934 was impressive, and it was clearly better than the victory of the Czech European champion in 1933, Václav Bečvář .

To compare the achievements of Ambarzumjan, here are the achievements of Bečvář and Paul Wahl , Möhringen, the German champion in 1934:

  • Bečvář: 552.5 kg (90 - 82.5 - 102.5 - 117.5 - 160);
  • Choice: 545 kg (85 - 102.5 - 105 - 110 - 142.5).

Sergo Ambarzumjan was a bricklayer, later also worked as a car mechanic and chauffeur.
