Serhij Anatolijowytsch Farenyk ( Ukrainian Сергій Анатолійович Фареник ; born February 23, 1960 in Volodarka , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian businessman and diplomat .

Life

Farenyk studied at the Faculty of Philosophy at Taras Shevchenko University in Kiev . He graduated in 1989 and received his doctorate. Farenyk worked as an associate professor at the Ukrainian Academy of Public Administration.

Professionally, he then mainly worked in the construction industry, initially at the LKS company. In 1998 he became General Director of LKS, which particularly stood out for the construction of large villas. He was also CEO of the construction company SAF-Inmet. From 1998 he also headed the Ukraziyastroy concern and was a member of the Council of Entrepreneurs of Ukraine. At times he headed the board of directors of the consortium, which also included Ukraziyastroy, a bank, a trading company and a company operating in the gas transport sector. He advocated the participation of the companies he represented in the reconstruction of Iraq and met in this context with the US Congressman Kurt Weldon .

Farenyk acted as an advisor to the Ukrainian Prime Minister and his deputy. By decree of November 28, 2003, he was sent to Germany as ambassador . The public took note of the decision with surprise, as it was not a diplomat but a businessman who was appointed ambassador. During his term of office, the visa affair fell , in which he acted as ambassador against a general suspicion that criminals in particular were traveling to Germany from Ukraine.

On July 9, 2005, the Ukrainian Public Prosecutor's Office prohibited Farenyk from leaving Ukraine. The background was allegations that Farenyk had falsified documents about the origin and sale of Turkmen natural gas between 2002 and 2004 , so that it was sold at low prices. The Ukraine suffered damage amounting to 60 million hryvnia , around 10 million euros. Farenyk denied the allegations, stressing that the prosecution's measure prevented him from exercising his ambassadorial office. At the end of July 2005, Farenyk was recalled from office by Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko .
