Serop Vartanian ( Armenian Սերոբ Վարդանեան ), also known as Aghbjur Serob (Աղբիւր Սերոբ, Turkish Serop Ağpür ) or Serob Pascha (Սերոբ Փաշա, * 1864 in Sohord, Ahlat , Vilâyet Bitlis ; † November 24, 1899 in the village of Gelieguzan, Sason ), was a revolutionary and commander who in the late 19th century organized the guerrilla network against the massacres of the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in 1894–1896 .

life and death

At the age of 20 he got into an argument with two Turks , killing one, and had to flee to Istanbul . In 1892 he traveled to Romania and opened a coffee house there. He joined the Armenian Revolutionary Federation and returned to Bitlis , where he took up armed struggle.

In 1888 a Kurdish unit tried to capture and kill Serop in the village of Babşen near Bitlis. After several hours of fighting, he was able to escape with his fedayeen . Thereafter Serop was given the title "Pasha" and the nickname Aghpiur . Fedayeen like Andranik Ozanian and Kevork Çavuş fought under him as commander .

On November 1, 1899, Aghbjur Serob's well was poisoned by an Armenian known as Avé , who, according to the Armenian representation, was bribed by Kurds. The attackers surrounded the house with hundreds of fighters. In the following exchange of fire, Serob and twelve other men were killed, his wife Sose Mayrig was wounded and taken prisoner. His head was buried in the Surb Karmrak Church of Bitlis and his body in the village of Geligüzan (Gelie-guzan).
