Serpico is an American crime series , a 15-episode season of which was produced between 1976 and 1977. The series was first broadcast on September 24, 1976 on NBC . In the Federal Republic of Germany the series was only broadcast in 1983.

The policeman Frank Serpico works for the NYPD . There he encounters corruption among his colleagues. In his attempts to clear up the crimes, however, he encountered resistance from within his own ranks. He is then transferred to another station and placed under Lieutenant Tom Sullivan. In the course of the series, Serpico has to deal with both criminals and corrupt colleagues.
background
The series is based on real experiences of Frank Serpico. When he entered the police force, he was confronted with mistreatment of suspects and bribery payments. Serpico, who did not want to participate in this system, was hindered by his superiors in providing information and was often transferred. In 1970 he testified before a corruption investigation committee. His story was published as a novel by Peter Maas and filmed in 1973 with Al Pacino in the lead role .
