Serra International

Serra International (Abbrev. Serra ) is an international Roman Catholic lay community for the promotion of the spiritual professions.

history

Serra International was founded in 1935 as an information platform for men in Seattle , USA; women have also been admitted as members since 1986. On May 3, 1951, Serra was incorporated into the Pontifical Work for Spiritual Professions of the Congregation for Catholic Education .

In the 1950s and 1960s, offshoots were established in Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. In the 1970s and 1980s in the UK, Brazil and Spain.

It was named after the operating in California Spanish Franciscans - missionary Junipero Serra .

organization

The community operates globally and has over 19,000 members (men, women and permanent deacons) in over 800 Serra clubs in almost 40 countries (as of 2013). Seat of Serra International in Chicago . There are 12 national councils (as of 2012).

In the United States, there are over 10,000 members in 290 local Serra clubs .

The Serra International Foundation , established in 1951, supports the work of the community.
