Serrasalmus sanchezi , in English. known as Sanchez's Piranha, Ruby-Red Piranha or Ruby-Throated Diamond Piranha, is a species of saw tetra from tropical South America .

description

Outwardly, the species resembles the Serrasalmus medinai found in Venezuela . Young fish are silvery colored with numerous black spots on the upper half of the body. The throat, chest and anal fin (anal) are clearly red in color. The caudal fin shows a dark terminal band and is darkly colored at the base. Adults are darker with numerous silver and purple iridescent scales and gradually reddening eyes. At spawning time, the color of the animals darkens and the spots become more indistinct. The animals reach a standard length of about 11 centimeters.

Serrasalmus sanchezi has 41 (40–42) abdominal teeth (Serrae) and 77–79 pores in the lateral line .

distribution

S. sanchezi occurs in the catchment area of the Río Ucayali in Peru. The type locality is Caño Yarina on the Río Ucayali, tributary of the Canal de Puinahua (lower Río Pacaya ). The species is also found in the upper and middle Amazon and the Marañón .

Way of life

Little is known about the way of life of S. sanchezi . The species occurs in white water rivers or in mixed water of white water and black water rivers , but not in pure black water.

Systematics

According to Géry, the species is assigned to the Serrasalmus rhombeus species complex , the Rhombeus group, which includes five to eight species in addition to Serrasalmus sanchezi . Other studies see the genus Serrasalmus as monophyletic with three main clades . According to this, Serrasalmus sanchezi belongs to clade B 2.
