Service de la protection

The Service de la protection ( SDLP ; German protection service ) is a unit of the French National Police . He ensures the personal protection of the French President , other high-ranking officials, former officials, foreign guests and other threatened persons. He is also responsible for material and organizational protective measures. The German security group of the Federal Criminal Police Office is comparable to the SDLP .

construction

The group consists of about 600 police officers. It is based in Paris on Rue de Miromesnil, near the Ministry of the Interior and the Elysée Palace . There is also a branch in Strasbourg .

Police officers with a minimum period of three years' service can apply. After completing appropriate training, they will be employed in the relevant post for five years. An extension for a further five years is possible as often as required.

The group is led by Contrôleur général Jean-Louis Fiamenghi, who was previously head of the RAID unit .

The group is structured as follows:

  • Rod
  • Security Group of the President of the Republic (Groupe de sécurité de la présidence de la République, GSPR)
  • Sub-Directorate for High French Personalities (sous-direction des hautes personnalités françaises)
    • Prime Minister Security Group (Groupe de sécurité du Premier ministre, GSPM),
    • Interior Minister's Security Group (Groupe de sécurité du Ministre de l'Intérieur, GSMI)
  • Sub-Directorate for High Foreign Personalities (sous-direction des hautes personnalités étrangères)
  • Sub-directorate for threatened personalities (sous-direction des personnalités menacées)
  • Sub-directorate for material and operational support with task forces (sous-direction des ressources et de l'appui opérationnel)

history

The group was founded under the name “Service for Official Travel” ( Services des voyages officiels , VO) after the assassination attempt on King Alexander I and Foreign Minister Louis Barthou in Marseille in 1934. In 1994 the name was changed.

In addition to an extensive fleet, the officers of the SDLP are equipped with the following weapons:

  • Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun
  • Heckler & Koch G36 assault rifle
