The bunker Strausberg of the Deutsche Post , also known as "Object 17/201 - Headquarters of the Central Staff of the DP in Strausberg", was a hub of the telecommunications network of the GDR and was part of the establishment of the GSN (basic network of the state intelligence of the GDR) and the Special network 1 of great importance.

Location

It was erected in the service facility of the GDR Deutsche Post in Strausberg on Garzauer Strasse. It was projected at the end of the 1970s and its construction lasted until the first half of the 1980s. Project planning, commissioning and use took place as part of Deutsche Post's investment plans.

The bunker has two floors with a total usable area of ​​around 8500 m². Its base is approx. 65 × 65 m. The establishment took place in the context of measures to expand the old telecommunications network of the GDR from the post-war period to the basic network of the state telecommunications system of the GDR as well as the establishment of the "integrated staff network of the party and state leadership of the GDR and the armed organs", in common parlance as "special network 1 ”.

Todays use

Since 2018, the non-profit association Orte der Geschichte eV has been trying to rededicate the bunker. The aim is to use it as an extracurricular learning and educational facility and a meeting place for creative minds as well as for historically interested people. Historical processes are to be taken up and presented to an audience in the form of various art, cultural and exhibition projects. Among other things, the plan is to use the several hundred meter long access tunnel to the building as a gallery, as well as the further gradual opening of the entire building for the public. On August 31, 2019, since the building was closed over 25 years ago, visitors were able to visit the bunker for the first time.
