Seth Shostak (born July 20, 1943 in Arlington County , Virginia ) is an American astronomer .

Shostak studied physics at Princeton University . He has been leading the SETI project since 2001 and is involved in numerous popular science astronomical television documentaries.

His specialty is the research of extraterrestrial intelligence , under which conditions life forms can arise and which biology (physique, reproduction, nutrition) could be possible under the respective environmental conditions. In particular, he is also looking for extraterrestrial intelligent life forms and checks whether extraterrestrial artificial signals are received. It examines which transmission technologies (including which frequencies for electromagnetic waves) are suitable and which should be checked with those with higher priority. He also gave numerous hints about what content of terrestrial civilization could be useful for extraterrestrial civilizations and how to code them optimally (see Arecibo message ).
