Setsuko Kuwabara

Setsuko Kuwabara ( Japanese 桑 原 節 子 Kuwabara Setsuko; born October 2, 1947 in Tokyo , Japan ) is a Japanese art historian.

Live and act

Setsuko Kuwabara studied German from 1966 to 1970 at the Sophia University in Tōkyō. After completing her BA, she worked as a research assistant in the applied linguistics laboratory at the university.

From 1974 to 1980 Kuwabara studied art history with Prof. Heinz Ladendorf and Prof. Günther Binding as well as prehistory and early history with Prof. Gernot Jakob-Friesen (1926-2019) at the University of Cologne . She completed her MA with the thesis "Emil Orlik and his contributions to artistic interrelationship". This was followed by doctoral studies at the University of Heidelberg with Prof. Peter Anselm Riedl , Prof. Lothar Ledderose and Prof. Doris Croissant. 1984 PhD with the dissertation "Emil Orlik and Japan". Until 1986 she worked as a research assistant in the East Asia Department of the Art History Institute of the University of Heidelberg at Ledderose.

From 1986 to 1990, Kuwabara was research assistant and successor to Dr. Steffi Schmidt in the Museum for East Asian Art, SMPK (today: Museum for Asian Art), Berlin-Dahlem. In 1990 she moved to the Japanese-German Center Berlin (JDZB) and headed the Documentation / Library department until 2008. During this time, she dealt with the field of scientific information on Japan and the organization of symposia, together with Prof. Eisuke Naitō at the time NACSIS, now NII. She worked for the international cooperation of the Japan-related scientific libraries and was a member of various organizing committees, such as B. EAJRS, "Tenri Antiquarian Materials Workshop" and OJAMASG (Overseas Japanese Antiquarian Materials Study Group).

Kuwabara publishes on art and cultural-historical topics in Germany and Japan.
