Lothar Ledderose

Lothar Ledderose (born July 12, 1942 in Munich ) is a German art historian specializing in Chinese and Japanese art.

Life

Lothar Ledderose (originally Ledderhose) studied at Princeton , Harvard and the University of Tokyo before settling in 1976 at the University of Cologne habilitated . In the same year Ledderose became professor for the history of East Asian art and director of the Institute for East Asian Art History at the University of Heidelberg . He retired in 2010. Ledderose was visiting professor at universities in the USA, Taiwan and Japan.

Since 1986 he has been a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . From 1984 to 1990 he was President, 1978–1984 and 1990–1996 Vice President of the German Oriental Society .

Ledderose has published numerous studies on Chinese art and was also the editor of important exhibition catalogs. His dissertation (published in 1970) was on the topic: The seal script (Chuan-shu) in the Ch'ing period .

In 2005 Lothar Ledderose received the Balzan Prize . Ledderose received the award for his outstanding research on the history of Chinese and Japanese art. He is the twelfth German among 106 award winners so far. Alongside the Nobel Prize, the Balzan Prize is one of the most important scientific awards in the world and is awarded by the International Balzan Foundation. It is endowed with 660,000 euros each.
