Settle Junction Railway Station

Settle Junction signal box

Settle Junction is a now closed train station and a signal box still in operation about 2.8 km south of Settle in North Yorkshire on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales . The station was on the Leeds-Morecambe line and was opened by the Midland Railway in October 1876 . The station was intended as a transfer station to the recently opened Settle-Carlisle railway line and an older - now closed - line to Morecambe . The hoped-for passenger volume did not correspond to reality, however, because the stations in Settle, Giggleswick and Long Preston not only offered transfer options, but also direct access to the respective locations - in contrast to the remote Settle Junction. Because of this, the station was closed on November 1, 1877.

The signal box now controls not only the branch of the Settle-Carlisle railway line , but also the sections along the line to Hellifield in the south, Blea Moor Sidings in the north and Carnforth in the northwest. At 39 km, the section to Carnforth is the longest section in the British railway network for which only one signal box is responsible. Network Rail is aware of the limitations this implies and is trying to change the situation.
