Shaddap You Face is a song written by Joe Dolce about a fictional rebellious Italian boy and released under the name Joe Dolce Music Theater . It appeared on the album of the same name in late 1980 and as a single in February 1981.

content

Shaddap You Face takes up the situation of the Italian minority in Australia and refers to the fact that the southern European immigrants were not highly regarded and first had to fight for their place in society. The song is therefore often used in the context of immigration and racism, e.g. B. in a newer version Dolce with a Vietnamese-Australian comedian as a protest song against a racist party in Australia. There is also a version of the song in the language of the Aborigines , the native Australians.

It's a catchy mood song with a simple melody and humorous, flippant lyrics. He often appears next to songs of a similar style such as the Ententanz or Anton from Tyrol in elections for the “worst song of all time” and similar anti-elections in the front seats.

Emergence

Dolce wrote Shaddap You Face on the train from Ohio to California . He remembered his grandmother from Italy , who had given him advice and instructions with an Italian accent at home in Ohio, such as: "You just have to shut up", in English slang: "Shaddap You Face". With a wink, Dolce transformed this into a little story about immigrants and later wrote the music for it. The song was financed by the Australian musician Mike Brady and recorded in his studios.

reception

Shaddap You Face reached number one in Germany , Austria and Switzerland . It was also number one on the Australian charts for eight weeks in 1980. It reached number one on the UK singles chart on February 21, 1981 and stayed there for three weeks until March 14, 1981. The song was number eight of the best-selling singles in 1981 in Great Britain. Shaddap You Face was number one in several other countries as well. In the USA, the song reached number 53 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 43 in the Cash Box Top 100 in the summer of 1981 .
