Dam break and tidal wave
On February 10, 2005 at 6:00 p.m. local time (2:00 p.m. CET, 1:00 p.m. UTC ), after unusually heavy continuous rain, a dam broke .
The tidal wave reached Pasni after four hours. Many smaller villages along the way, including Sindhipuso (Sindhi Paso) and Turati, were flooded. Half Pasni with a population of about 10,000 people was then about 1 m under water. A state of emergency was declared in Pasni, Awaran and Kharan . Authorities sent thousands of soldiers to rescue operations in the area.
Further damage
A 40-kilometer section of the Makran Coastal Highway (National Highway 10), which connects the region to Karachi , and several bridges (including the Cheel Bridge) were washed away. Eyewitnesses reported that the masses of water caught trucks and cars and washed them into the sea. Many bodies were later found in the sea.
The runway of the airport in Pasni was also unusable due to the masses of water, the airport was closed. The generators at the Pasni power station were damaged, the electricity supply failed and telephone lines were cut. Wheat and onion fields of around 40,000 acres (161 km²) in Kharan and Awaran were destroyed, as was a large number of livestock. The Babar Shor area was also affected.
Gaggo dam break
About three days later, on the night of February 12th to 13th, the smaller Gaggo Dam in the Las Bela district broke. This cost at least seven lives. As a result of this break, eleven villages were flooded by the water masses.
Aakra Kaur Dam breach
On the night of March 2nd to 3rd, 2005, another dam broke in Balochistan, the Aakra Kaurr dam in the Gwadar district. Again the cause was heavy rain for two days with floods that overflowed the dam. A closure of the flood relief system was destroyed, which resulted in an uncontrolled runoff. Five villages were flooded. The area residents have been evacuated and thousands have been taken to safe places. The towns of Sur Bandar and Gwadar were also affected. No fatalities were reported. The river dammed here is the Sur Bandar River (or one of its tributaries).
In Balochistan, the storms left around 25,000 people homeless. The floods killed a total of 360 people. However, the number of victims is very contradictory in the various reports.
