The Shaheed Minar ( Bengali শহীদ মিনার śahīd minār ) is a national monument in Dhaka . The monument commemorates the Bangladeshi students who lost their lives in demonstrations in February 1952 as part of the movement for the recognition of Bengali as the state language in Pakistan .

Historical background

In 1952, the regime of the then decided Pakistan the collection of Urdu the sole official language, although it was mother tongue for only 3% of the population. In East Pakistan , Bengali was spoken almost exclusively . During protests in Dhaka on February 21, police shot at demonstrators; there were deaths.

The ongoing linguistic and cultural oppression of East Pakistan from West Pakistan finally led to the secession and establishment of Bangladesh in 1971 . Since then, February 21 has been celebrated there as the Day of Martyrs . At the request of Bangladesh, this day was in November 1999 by the UNESCO for International Mother Language Day levied. On May 16, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly also proclaimed 2008 the International Year of Languages .
