Shalist

The white wine variety Shalistin is a variety created by natural mutation of Cabernet Sauvignon or Malian . It was discovered after 1984 in the vineyards of the Clegett Wines winery in Langhorne Creek on the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia.

Malcolm Clegett planted the first seedlings of the gray-berry Malian variety in 1984. A little later some of these seedlings showed white berries.

Through selection, Malcolm managed to breed a new white variety. He first called it White Cabernet , but eventually registered it under the name Shalistin. The name is a combination of the first names of his three children Shaun, Melissa and Justin. The grape variety has since been recognized by the Office International de la Vigne et du Vin . While Malian still has anthocyanins in the upper layer of the berry skin, but has lost them in the lower layer of the epidermis , the shalistin has no pigments whatsoever.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is very hairy, whitish and has a carmine tinge. The young leaves are also very hairy and the leaf surface is already slightly blistered. The leaf edge of the young leaves is slightly reddish in color
  • The medium-sized dark green leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented. The stem bay is closed in a V-shape. The leaf is only slightly serrated. The teeth are set very wide in comparison to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is blistered and rough.
  • The mostly conical to cylindrical grape is usually shouldered, small to medium in size and dense to compact. The round berries are small and from whitish to golden yellow in color. The peel of the berry is extremely strong and firm.
