Participants in the Fifth French Antarctic Expedition (1908-1910) led by polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot sighted and mapped the lower section of the glacier in 1909. The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1948 carried out further measurements . The upper section of the glacier was examined by the US Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947-1948) and the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition (1956-1957). The FIDS named it for its rugged appearance.
